Additives

100% bio-based ECO range
coatings additives;

We offer to the market non-ionic and anionic surfactants, which are used as wetting agents, emulsifiers, co-emulsifiers, stabilisers in emulsion polymerisation and dispersants. We also offer PolyEthylene Glycols (PEGs) and vegetable oils used in many applications.

Discover our ECO range of 100% bio-based surfactants and PEGs. Over 50 products make up the ECO range made by using bio-based ethylene oxide (EO) which we manufacture from biomass ethanol. Coupling the use of bio-based EO with the high proportion of renewable energy used at the manufacturing plant, leads to a significant reduction in carbon footprint for the ECO product range. Formulators can now access 100% renewable surfactants without sacrificing performance to help meet increasingly demanding sustainability targets.

Croda's range of ECO surfactants

  • 100% renewable
  • Performance identical to petrochemical based options
  • Lower carbon footprint than petrochemically derived ingredients
  • USDA BioPreferred® Program third party certification*
  • Made using renewable energy
    *Calculated using ASTM D6866 which is validated by carbon 14 testing

Ethoxylated natural fatty alcohols

The Brij range of non-ionic surfactants are alkyl polyglycol ethers that are derived from a variety of natural straight chain alcohols. The standard ranges are based upon lauryl (L) -, cetyl (C) -, cetostearyl (CS) -, stearyl (S) - and oleyl (O) alcohol.

Sorbitan esters and ethoxylates

Croda offers sorbitan esters under the name Span. The Span products are used as W/O emulsifier, pigment dispersant in polar and non-polar liquids and have found their use in decorative and industrial coatings.

Our ethoxylated sorbitan esters are known under the name Tween. These non-ionic products can be used as versatile O/W and/or W/O emulsifiers, dispersants, wetting agents and solubilisers for multiple applications. As an example, Tween 40 is partly or fully bio-based and inherently biodegradable and can be used in emulsion polymerisation for acrylic waterborne adhesives and coatings. The Multiwet wetting agents are non-silicone and non-fluorinated multifunctional ingredients. They offer excellent substrate wetting, improved solids wetting and reduced foaming.

Other non-ionic surfactants series include Synperonic alcohol alkoxylates, Myrj stearic acid ethoxylates, Etocas castor oil ethoxylates and Croduret hydrogenated castor oil ethoxylated. Our offer also includes lanolin and lanolin derivatives such as Corona 9 and Fluilan which are used to impart surface slip and enhanced colour development in solvent-borne protective coatings.

Polyethylene glycols (PEGs)

Renex PEGs are water soluble linear polymers formed through ethoxylation of ethylene glycol. Products serve different functions, as binders, building blocks, humectants and solvents. PolyUrethanes (PU) compatible grades are available with low water content.
