Fibre thread lines on the weaving loom machine

Spin finishes

Natural fibres such as cotton and wool have natural protection and lubrication on their surfaces - cotton has waxes and wool has grease (predominantly lanolin). In the past this was sufficient for fibres to be processed but today more effective products are normally used after an initial washing process. However, man-made fibres have no such natural surface finish and are generally impossible to process without a spin finish due to their high friction, their propensity to build up high static charges and their tendency to fly apart during processing. Spin finishes are formulated to negate these properties and at times to provide additional beneficial effects.

We produce ingredients and formulated spin finishes to enable the efficient production and processing of man made fibres and processing them into yarn during downstream processing.

Spin finishes are predominantly processing aids applied to the fibre surface during or immediately after fibre extrusion. They positively influence the way that fibre is processed both by the fibre maker and by their customers who conduct further processing.

A spin finish primary function is to provide:

  • lubrication - allows fibres to slide over machine surfaces, protecting both the fibre and the equipment. This also controls the sliding of fibres over each other in staple processes and changes the fibre feel;

  • anti-static - especially for synthetic polymers, the generation of static charge is a major issue. Antistatic agents allow charges to leak away; and

  • cohesion - at the early stages of manufacture, fibres and filaments can easily fly apart. Cohesive agents prevents snagging and broken filaments and also prevent airborne loose fibres.

Croda's focus is on finishes for man-made fibres and inparticular to provide chemical solutions to overcome difficult process operations.
