Passive thermal regulation with bio‑based materials
CrodaTherm™ ME 28XD is a microencapsulated phase change material designed to provide passive thermal regulation across a wide range of applications.
CrodaTherm ME 28XD is an acrylic core–shell particle dispersion in water, developed using Croda’s formaldehyde‑free microencapsulation technology. The phase change material core is derived from plant‑based feedstocks, offering reliable thermal performance alongside a more sustainable material profile.
Thermal performance
CrodaTherm ME 28XD is designed to absorb and release heat at defined temperatures, helping materials manage temperature fluctuations without the need for external energy input.
Key thermal properties include:
- Peak melting temperature of 28 °C
- Latent heat of 180 kJ/kg
These characteristics make it suitable for applications where maintaining thermal comfort and temperature stability is important, including textiles, bedding and construction materials. In these areas, passive temperature regulation can support both improved comfort and greater energy efficiency.
Microencapsulation and durability
The core–shell microcapsule structure protects the phase change material and helps ensure consistent performance over the product’s service life. The dispersion contains fine, uniform particles with very low levels of non‑encapsulated wax, supporting formulation stability and ease of use in aqueous systems.
Thermal cycling assessments demonstrate good durability, confirming the suitability of CrodaTherm ME 28XD for long‑term applications.
Sustainability considerations
Sustainability was a key factor in the development of CrodaTherm ME 28XD. The PCM core wax is USDA‑certified 100% bio‑based, helping customers work towards sustainability targets without compromising technical performance.
By enabling passive thermal regulation, CrodaTherm ME 28XD may also contribute to reduced energy demand in end‑use applications, supporting more efficient product design.
Formulation flexibility
CrodaTherm ME 28XD is supplied as a 50% solids aqueous dispersion with a neutral pH, allowing straightforward handling and incorporation into a wide range of formulations.
Its combination of performance, stability and bio‑based content makes it a practical option for manufacturers looking to introduce thermal regulation into new or existing products.
